Prescribed fire planned for Wednesday in San Jacinto Mountains

WHAT:

Firefighters plan to begin the Thomas Mountain Prescribed Burn. The purpose of the burn is to reduce fuels under controlled conditions. This type of ecological restoration helps protect communities from wildfire and helps improve watershed health. Millions of Southern Californians depend on water that originates in San Bernardino National Forest.

WHO:

Firefighters and staff from San Bernardino National Forest, a unit of the U.S. Forest Service within the United State Department of Agriculture (USDA).

WHERE:

Thomas Mountain, north of Anza, CA and between Highway 371 and Highway 74 in the San Jacinto Mountains.

WHEN:

Wednesday, January 31, 2018, at approximately 9 a.m. Operations may continue through the weekend. An unexpected change in weather conditions will cancel the burn.

CLOSURES: Intermittent recreational closures may occur at Thomas Mountain yellow post sites (semi-developed campgrounds), Thomas Mountain Road (6S13) and the Ramona Trail.

SAFETY: Smoke may be visible in the air. Drivers in the area should slow down for personnel on the sides of local roads.
