John Springer, the Kern River Ranger District’s Sales Administrator, promotes the Penny Pines program whenever he can. John loves discussing the process of reforesting land. He often organizes these reforestation projects himself—ordering trees, managing the planting contracts, arranging the thinning years later, and finally showing off these beautiful plantations throughout the process.
Springer met with a small group on Saturday August 15 to highlight the Stormy Fire Penny Pines Plantation, which was planted after the 1990 Stormy Fire. He met with this small group from the Kern River Valley Historical Society in the morning near Tiger Flat in the Greenhorn Mountains, where they all enjoyed the cooler temperature and scenic beauty of the forest. John led a discussion about the Penny Pines program and all it has accomplished locally.
“We talked about the whole process from gathering seeds, to planting, to maintaining the plantations,” stated Springer. He continued, “I’ve met with almost every group in the Kern River Valley to talk about the Penny Pines program, and I love the opportunity to share its amazing story.” He is always happy to schedule group field trips to highlight plantations.
