The Siuslaw National Forest prescribed burning for the South Jetty could happen as early as this Thursday, September 11 and the Dunes Overlook the week of September 15. All burning is weather dependent and may not occur if the conditions change.
“We are doing the work this time of year to impact as little as possible the public who visit the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area,” stated Dan Eddy, Fire Management Officer for the Siuslaw National Forest.
The prescribed burns include two sites: 35 acres located just north of the South Jetty Staging Area in the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area; and 30 more acres located by the Dunes Day Use Viewing Platform Area. Prescribed burning is when fire is intentionally lit to manage and reduce invasive plant species such as European Beach Grass and Scotch Broom which are in both sites.
There will be fire engines and one fire patrol on site and Forest officials ask that people stay out of the immediate area for safety concerns. No road closures are planned but traffic may be restricted to one lane on South Jetty Road the day of the burn. Trail closures will occur temporarily on the south end of the Overlook Dunes Trail system near the mouth of Tahkenitch Creek during the week of September 15.
Smoke may be visible from Highway 101 around Florence during the South Jetty burn and from the Dunes Overlook Recreation Area during the week of September 15.
Scotch broom seeds are easily spread in high use areas, near roads and by motorized vehicles. Visitors to the Oregon Dunes can help prevent the spread of Scotch broom and other noxious weeds by avoiding heavily infected areas with their Off-highway vehicles and thoroughly washing the vehicles when the leave the Dunes.
If you have any questions or concerns please contact Coastal Valley Interagency Communication Center (CVICC) at 541-750-7024. Please remain careful when visiting or traveling throughout the Forest. Report all fires to CVICC or call 911.
