Six Rivers National Forest lifts fire restrictions
Release Date: Sep 24, 2015
EUREKA, California, September 24, 2015 – Due to recent rainfall, cooler temperatures and higher humidity, Forest Supervisor Merv George announced today that fire restrictions will be lifted in the Six Rivers National Forest as of this Friday, September 25.
The lifting of fire restrictions means that forest visitors may have open campfires outside of designated campgrounds, as long as they are in possession of a valid California campfire permit. These permits are free and available from any US Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, or California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CalFire) office. You may also obtain a California Campfire Permit online at the Prevent Wildfire CA.org website .
“Lifting these restrictions does not mean fire season is over. Continued warm, dry and windy conditions could put us back up into the high fire danger category,” said George. While he encourages the public to visit the forest, he wants everyone to be careful with fire and cautious in areas burned by the recent wildfires.
“We’ve had more than 100,000 acres burn on the Six Rivers in the last 57 days. Some of these fires are still burning, and will be doing so until we get significant rain or snow,” said George. “And, even when the fire is out, there are all sorts of hazards out there.”
Potential hazards include standing dead trees, rolling rocks and logs, burned-out stump holes, and drainages within and downstream of burned areas where rains can produce flash floods. Travel is discouraged on forest roads within fire perimeters due to falling trees and unsafe conditions.
Although the Six Rivers has lifted its fire restrictions, other area forests continue to have their restrictions in place. CalFire’s statewide burn ban also remains in effect. Please contact your local US Forest Service or CalFire office for more information.
