REDDING, Calif. - Since 9 a.m. Monday morning, the Shasta-Trinity National Forest (NF) has received 296 lightning strikes. Sixteen fires on three management units have been discovered so far. The largest of these incidents is three acres. With the amount of lightning the Shasta-Trinity NF has received, there is potential for more fires to be detected. Firefighters will continue patrolling all forest areas.
The Shasta McCloud Management Unit responded to the Gumboot Fire, which is now in patrol status.
The Trinity River Management Unit has responded to eight fires, with five within the Trinity Alps Wilderness Area. Located one mile west of the Trinity Lake boat-in Captain’s Point Campground is the largest fire on the forest; the Captain Fire, at three acres.
The South Fork Management Unit had seven new fires, six of which are now contained. The remaining fire will be staffed today.
Additional lightning is possible across the forest over the next few days. The forest has firefighting resources on hand to maintain initial attack capabilities and to be prepared for any new fires that may occur.

Please remember that the Shasta-Trinity NF remains under Fire Restrictions. This means campfires are permitted only in designated and approved campgrounds, designated Fire Safe Sites and within federally designated wilderness areas. We are asking the public to help us protect our natural resources and local communities from unwanted wildfire. Forest visitors should practice extra caution by extinguishing campfires (where allowed) until they are cold to the touch, dispose of cigarettes properly and be aware of anything that may cause a spark and ignite a wildfire.
