Current Fire Situation:
An inversion trapped smoke in the valleys within the River Complex today, limiting visibility for firefighters and preventing air resources from operating. The fire was more active near the southeast flank of the fire. East of Ironside Mountain, firefighters worked to catch the fire north of the 5N18 Road and used dozers to build indirect line south and east of the fire. Firefighters continue to strengthen and improve the containment line along the western flank of the fire.

Tonight, areas above the inversion will be more active. Rolling debris from drought-weakened trees and snags from old burns are a primary hazard for firefighters and contribute to spread of the fire.

A stable high pressure system is established over the area causing limited dispersion of smoke.  Air quality advisories or alerts have been issued for parts for Trinity County by the North Coast Unified Air Quality Management District.  For more information on air quality in the area, visit http://www.ncuaqmd.org/index.php?page=wildfire

The mission of the Forest Service is to sustain the health, diversity and productivity of the nation's forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations. The agency manages 193 million acres of public land, provides assistance to state and private landowners, and maintains the largest forestry research organization in the world. Public lands the Forest Service manages contribute more than $13 billion to the economy each year through visitor spending alone. Those same lands provide 20 percent of the nation's clean water supply, a value estimated at $7.2 billion per year. The agency has either a direct or indirect role in stewardship of about 80 percent of the 850 million forested acres within the U.S., of which 100 million acres are urban forests where most Americans live.
