Blue Lake Road - As part of the Blue Lake Expansion project, The City and Borough of Sitka will be increasing the height of the Blue Lake dam. This construction began in November 2012. For reasons of safety, several recreation spots are now unavailable to the public because they lie within the construction and safety zone of the project. Blue Lake Road and Sawmill Creek Campground will be closed to public vehicles, bicycles and foot traffic. Also included and closed is the Beaver Lake Trail between the campground and Beaver Lake. Foot traffic is allowed on Blue Lake Road only to access the Thimbleberry – Heart Lake Trail from the Blue Lake Road end. The attached map of the project area shows areas that are open and closed. Signing will be in place to remind users of these closures which will be in place until sometime in 2015. For updates during this time, stay tuned to the local media.
Kruzof Island - North Beach users - According to the MVUM, the beach area below mean high tide is the only area designated for open riding. Use the newly designated trail to North Beach. All old OHV access routes to North beach are now closed as well as the dune grass bluff. Riders must stay off vegetated portions of the lower beach to assist with stabilizing the beach and protecting the upper beach meadow which is habitat for sensitive species.
Kruzof Island Trail (#317590) - Water diversion dips are built on the trail between Mud Bay and Iris Meadows to divert water and to maintain the trail surfacing. Use of All Terrain Vehicles requires reducing speeds to negotiate these two foot deep structures safely. Reflective markers are posted at each dip.
