Fire Experts will Utilize Optimal Weather “Windows” Throughout the 2014-2015 Burning Season to Conduct Prescribed Fire Treatments
Release Date: Oct 3, 2014
PHOENIX (October 3) – The season to begin prescribed fire treatments in Rim Country has arrived. Over the next several months, the Payson and Pleasant Valley ranger districts will take advantage of cooler temperatures and higher humilities to conduct prescribed burns which remove accumulations of heavy vegetation and diminish the threat of wildfire. Smoke may be visible while burning occurs. The amount of smoke will depend on the weather, amount of material to burn (trees and brush), and where you are in relation to the fire. Fire managers utilize strategies and tactics to minimize the impacts of smoke wherever possible. As plans are developed for a prescribed fire, weather forecasts are carefully considered along with anticipated fire behavior, topography and how close the activities are to the communities. All these factors can affect the level of smoke seen in the area.
Many plants and animals are dependent upon fire to create conditions that are essential for them to survive and flourish. Prescribed burning is an effective land management tool used to improve the health of the forest and reduce heavy amounts of excess vegetation.
The growth, rate of fire spread, and smoke from a prescribed fire treatment are closely monitored. Weather can change quickly. Fire managers will adjust as the situation changes, taking advantage of opportunities around the district if conditions are favorable. If conditions become unfavorable the project will cease until conditions meet treatment objectives.
