Series of open houses held throughout Tonto National Forest

Young, Ariz. (Feb. 11, 2013) - A long-term recreation sustainability planning open house scheduled for Young, Ariz., this evening is cancelled due to a winter storm.

The open house is re-scheduled for Thurs., Feb. 28, at the Pleasant Valley Community Center, Hwy 288, Young, Ariz.

The open house is one of approximately eight open houses that have been held throughout the Tonto National Forest and in adjacent communities over the past several weeks.

“It is imperative that we look at our long-range recreation management program in terms of sustainability – social, economic, and financial,” stated Forest Supervisor Neil Bosworth.

“We are committed to responsibly serving the public by efficiently operating and, when necessary, modifying the services we offer to ensure recreational activities are provided in the right places,” he continued. ‘We need the public’s input and support in determining the future of our developed recreation sites.”

“National economic conditions and mounting financial demands underscore the inadequacy of traditional funding sources to meet growing population needs and recreation expectations. We must not only engage the public to explore their expectations and needs, we must also expand our program delivery capacity funding to utilize user fees, volunteers, grant programs, private donations and partners in the nonprofit sector.

“Our forest recreation program is one of the largest and most complex in the U.S. National Forest system and requires a wide variety of interests and perspectives to be involved. We look forward to partnering with our recreation visitors in developing a sustainable recreation program for the future.”

“It is the responsibility of all of us to not only care for today’s forest but also the forest of the futures – for our children and our children’s children. That responsibility is shared by all of us,” concluded Bosworth.
