Calf-Copeland Project Field Trip -- Registration Open for a Tour of Calf and Copeland Creeks on Sept. 10th to Gather Input on Future Projects

Release Date: Aug 24, 2015

Umpqua National Forest is hosting a public fieldtrip to the Calf-Copeland area on Thursday, Sept. 10th, to see restoration opportunities existing in the Calf-Copeland Project on the North Umpqua Ranger District.

The field trip begins at 10 a.m. in the North Umpqua Ranger Station in Glide with a return time of 3:30 p.m. The first hour will be spent in the office sharing information about the planning area.  People may stay just for the office meeting.

Register for the field trip by Sept. 8 by contacting Jane Beaulieu at jbeaulieu@fs.fed.us or 541-957-3466. Bring a lunch, water, weather-appropriate gear, and hiking shoes or boots. Participants should plan on carpooling for the field trip.

The Calf-Copeland area includes several small watersheds that drain directly into the North Umpqua River in addition to Calf and Copeland creeks. Highway 138 runs through the north portion of the planning area. Twin Lakes lies in the center of the planning area.

“The Forest Service is beginning preliminary analysis to determine the condition of resources in the Calf-Copeland area and what kinds of restoration may be needed,” said Bill Mulholland, North Umpqua District Ranger. “Restoration opportunities we have noted in the project area include restoring habitat for legacy trees including sugar pine, ponderosa pine and white oak, reducing habitat fragmentation on the landscape, and increasing landscape resilience to uncharacteristic fires, pests and pathogens.”

The North Umpqua Ranger Station is located at 18782 North Umpqua Highway, Glide.
