TIMPOONEKE TRAILHEAD CLOSURE
Pleasant Grove, Utah, July 25, 2012 - Hiking Mount Timpanogos is a favorite summer tradition for thousands of visitors each year. This year from August fifth to approximately September fifth, the Timpooneke Trailhead in American Fork Canyon will be closed due to construction activity. The Timpooneke Trailhead is one of two trailheads that are utilized for hiking Mount Timpanogos. This trailhead is being reconstructed in order to accommodate more vehicles and improve traffic flow. August is typically a very popular month for hiking Mount Timpanogos and this construction will impact how people access the Timpooneke Trail #053. (see attached map)
Alternate Trailheads include the Pine Hollow Trailhead and the Summit Trailhead both located on State Route 92. From these trailheads the Pine Hollow Trail #047, Salamander Flat Trail #150 and the Willow Hollow Trail #159 will be used to connect to the Timpooneke trail #053. While these are alternates, visitors need to keep in mind that these options add 5-7 miles round trip to your hike. (see attached map)
Please keep these items in mind when planning your Mount Timpanogos hike:
Understand where the closure area is.
Understand where you can legally park your vehicle.
Do not park your vehicle in a manner that impedes the flow of traffic on roads and in the trailhead. Vehicles parked in a manner that impedes the flow of traffic may be towed.
Plan your visit so that you avoid Saturdays and holidays.
While the Mount Timpanogos Trail #052 is another option, the Mount Timpanogos trailhead also experiences extremely high use on Saturdays and holidays and cannot accommodate the normal visitation on those days.
Realize that if the trailheads are full, that you will need to change your plans by coming back later in the day, scheduling a different day to do your hike, or finding an alternate trail to hike.
For more information you can contact the Pleasant Grove Ranger District at 801-785-3563, the information booths located on State Route 92, or visit our website at http://www.fs.usda.gov/uwcnf
