Baker City, OR: Salvage logging operations have begun on a portion of the Cornet/Windy Ridge Fire. The first timber sale is for 7.5 million board feet of danger tree removal along open roads in the burned area. Operations include a Tong Thrower (pictured below), which follows behind the sawyers. The thrower moves cut logs from the hillside to the roadside that are loaded onto trucks.

Of the 104,000 acre fire 30,035 acres are on Forest Service administered lands. Immediately after the fire a Burned Area Emergency Response team was brought in to evaluate the effects of the fire and implement necessary public safety measures. The staff at the Whitman District then went to work analyzing the 30,035 acres for possible salvage logging opportunities.

Eleven million board feet of wood will be extracted over the course of 2016 from the Cornet/Windy Ridge Fire on Forest Service administered lands. First the 7.5 million board foot danger tree removal sale along open roads, then two 250 acre sales totaling 2.5 million board feet, and a 1 million board foot danger tree removal sale done in conjunction with the Oregon Department of Transportation along Highway 245.

“We’re happy to see the sawyers out here beginning felling operations,” said Whitman District Ranger, Jeff Tomac. “I’m very proud of how quickly and efficiently my staff worked to accomplish the necessary planning and thankful to the community and the other agencies for their support,” continued Tomac.

Please use caution when traveling in the Dooley Mountain area and expect logging operations along Denny Creek Road (FSR 1140), Ebell Creek Road (FSR 1100) and on Lower Mill Creek road (FSR 090).
