Newly-constructed boat ramp at Phillips Reservoir.

BAKER CITY, Ore. – Construction of the new Mason Dam boat ramp at Phillips Reservoir has been completed, and the temporary area closure has been lifted.

Contractors recently finished work on a $275,000 project to remove a deteriorated asphalt ramp and replace it with a more durable cast-in-place concrete ramp, improving access, safety and convenience for boaters. Phillips Reservoir, located east of Sumpter, is a popular recreational boating destination on the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest. Construction was funded through a partnership between the Forest Service, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Oregon State Marine Board.

“Boating is an important part of the recreational opportunities we offer on the Wallowa-Whitman, and we’re always pleased to make it easier for folks to get outside and enjoy the forest,” Whitman District Ranger Kendall Cikanek said. “We heard from users that the old ramp was an obstacle, so we made it a priority to improve. This year afforded us ideal conditions for casting the ramp to a length that will allow it to remain in use during low water levels.”
