Baker City, OR –

Anthony Lakes Campground and Day Use Sites

The spring fed water system at Anthony Lakes Campground and Day Use sites is currently being updated to a groundwater well system. The drilling of the well, located near the entrance to Anthony Lakes Campground, will be completed this week. The pump head will be installed next week and the new system will be online by the end of July. Please excuse any construction noise throughout this process.

The second phase of this project will include replacing the water pipes that surround Anthony Lake and service the Day Use sites. This process will be ongoing throughout the summer and may cause some occasional noise disturbance to visitors of Anthony Lakes. The Anthony Lakes Ski Lodge and the nearby cabins will remain on the spring fed system.

Elkhorn Scenic Byway – Sinkhole

The sinkhole on the Elkhorn Scenic Byway (Forest Service Road 73) near the junction of Antone Creek and the Byway has been evaluated by Forest Service Engineers and crews are ready to begin making repairs in early July. The repair date was chosen to avoid interfering with the Baker City Cycling Classic that will be utilizing the route on June 28. The sinkhole was caused by water from Antone Creek undercutting a culvert.

Forest Service Road 77

Forest Service Road 77 between Main Eagle and Taylor Green is getting some much needed attention this summer. The Road Maintenance Contractor is currently working in the area; if possible please avoid this 8.5 mile section of road from now until July 2, when the work is scheduled to be completed.

This section of area, “Is one of the gems of the La Grande Ranger District,” says La Grande Roads Manager Mark Gomez. “Visitors to West Eagle Campground and Trailhead will appreciate a much smoother drive after the work is finished.”

Graven Enterprises from Richland, Oregon is the contractor. Work includes bringing the fine materials back to the surface and adding three thousand yards of gravel to spot rock the road.

Little Minam River Trail Bridge

During July-August, 2015, the trail bridge over the Little Minam River (Trail #1901) is scheduled for replacement.  This location is approximately a half-mile upstream from the confluence of the Minam and Little Minam River.  The existing log stringer bridge is 58 years old and will be replaced with a glued-laminated (glulam) bridge 55 feet long.  During the construction period, Trail #1901 will be closed in the vicinity of the project.
