Construction of new parking, toilets, picnic tables and paths at Detroit Flats will begin in late July and progress into the Fall and early Winter. The project will also include construction of a city park/day use area in the City of Detroit with a walking/biking trail connecting to the newly renovated Detroit Flats facilities.

The improvements at Detroit Flats are part of a larger effort to provide new and enhanced recreation facilities in the area. This effort includes new recreation events, the designation of Highway 46 as a State Scenic Bikeway, the construction of a day use area and bicycle portal (repair station, day use site, information board and more) on the site of the old Detroit elementary school and the reconstruction of the facilities at Detroit Flats. This work is a partnership between the City of Detroit, Western Lands Division of Federal Highways and the Detroit Ranger District. An additional grant from Oregon State Parks will also expand the facilities available at the new Detroit day use/city park.

"It is exciting to have worked with so many community members and other partners over the last 5 years to bring us to this point. While the summer closure is inconvenient, we look forward to the completion of the construction in time for next spring." commented Grady McMahan, Detroit District Ranger. Visitors who would like to picnic can go to Upper Arm Day Use site. A use fee of $5.00 is required.
