Larry-Bass Project - Bass Creek Recreation Area

Stevensville Ranger District

Project Information - Updated August 14, 2013

We appreciate your patience as we work through the Larry Bass Project.

The goals of the Larry-Bass project are:

  • To improve forest resilience to mountain pine beetle infestation
  • To retain large diameter ponderosa pine trees in the Bass Creek Recreation Area
  • To release and enlarge the aspen clones
  • To add about 4 miles of existing trails to the National Forest trail system

New information:   The road to Bass Creek Overlook will open at 8 a.m. on August 17th.  Folks will need to stay on the road to the overlook and not enter into the Larry Bass project closure area.  Signs will be posted on site.

Sites that are currently open or will be open as of August 17th are:

  • Charles Waters Campground - currently open
  • Bass Creek Trailhead and Trail - currently open
  • Road to Bass Creek Overlook and the overlook - to be opened by August 17th

All other areas remain closed at this time.  Please drive slowly as logging trucks are entering and leaving the area in the early morning and around mid-day.

Trail & Area Closures - The Larry Creek Trails and the area north of Bass Creek Road are closed to the public to provide for visitor safety.
