Our work in Conservation Education should adhere to established professional guidelines and should correlate to educational standards. Many tools are available to help us meet these quality guidelines.
Education Standards of Learning
Forest Service Learner Guidelines (Forest Service 2002, pdf)
This helpful Forest Service tool will help you design and implement effective Conservation Education programs and activities. This guide was developed based on the NAAEE's Environmental Education Learner Guidelines.
Environmental Education Learner Guidelines: Excellence ln EE
Guidelines for Learning (Pre K-12), and its companion piece, the Guidelines for Learning (Pre K-12) - Executive Summary & Self Assessment Tool, developed to support state and local environmental education efforts by setting expectations for performance and achievement in grades 4, 8, and 12.
National Science Education Standards
The National Science Education Standards were produced by the National Research Council in 1995 and published in 1996. The Standards were the result of four years of work by twenty-two scientific and science education societies and over 18,000 individual contributors. The science education standards can be accessed and downloaded online.

Guidelines for Excellence Initiative -- North American Association for Environmental Education
The Forest Service-Conservation Education program has been an early and strong supporter of the national Guidelines for Excellence initiative of the North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE). The project provides professional guidance on the development and evaluation of effective environmental education programs and materials. These guidelines are vital tools to help guide program development, and help evaluate and refine exisiting programs and materials.

North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE)
The North American Association for Environmental Education is the professional organization for environmental education. The organization provides materials for K-12 classrooms, universities (materials for both instructors and students).The NAAEE has been creating opportunities for its members to advance and refine skills in environmental education for more then 35 years.
