Migratory Bird Festival 2012

North Cascades Institute and the Forest Service have created the annual Migratory Bird Festival to make nature and cultural history come alive for students from Seattle and Mt. Vernon, Wash. This spring the agencies take 80 youth and 15 elders touring four wildlife habitats and a historical lighthouse on Ebey’s Landing National Historic Reserve on Whidbey Island. They experience migration from a bird’s perspective, learn about quality habitat and play interactive games. A hike up to a lighthouse perched atop a high sea bluff gives a viewpoint to spot sea birds and migratory shore birds. Marine lab touch tanks house giant Pacific octopus, scallops, crabs and some of the invertebrates that make up the bases of the food web.
