Encompassing more than 3.1 million acres of National Forest Service land stretching across seven districts from Bozeman and West Yellowstone on the west-end, crossing much of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem including the Gardiner, Yellowstone and Beartooth Ranger Districts and moving east-ward to the far southeastern portions of Montana and northwestern South Dakota with the Ashland and Sioux Ranger Districts. The Forest is known as one of the most ecologically diverse forests in the region and a gateway to the Absaroka Beartooth Wilderness, the Lee Metcalf Wilderness and to Yellowstone National Park

The Custer Gallatin National Forest stretches from south central Montana to north western South Dakota and allows visitors to explore some of the largest wilderness landscapes, highest peaks, rolling hills and vast stretches of open prairie intermixed with green islands alongside streams, lakes and rivers.
