About the Forest

Of all the many natural splendors of the Gallatin National Forest - from its dancing rivers to its rich range of wildlife - its mountains may remain most firmly etched in the minds of those who visit.  Whether they drink in the high country from the Gallatin's two thousand miles of trail or nearly one thousand miles of roadway, they will quickly realize why people have long waxed poetic about these highlands.  "Traveled through some of the most beautiful mountain scenery of which it is possible for man to conceive," wrote W. E. Atchison, a gold seeker who in 1864 passed before the high, wild country lining the northern reaches of today's Gallatin National Forest.  "It was beautiful rather than sublime, those mighty hills as they rise in gentle slopes away up toward the heavens covered with forests of pine and the verdure of summer."

The Gallatin National Forest is located in south-western Montana,
just north of Yellowstone National Park.
