The National Forests in North Carolina offers many activities such as hiking, biking, camping, birding, driving for pleasure, harvesting mushrooms, and gathering firewood.  Many of the facilities and services associated with these activities are free although some do require a fee or permit to help maintain and improve the amenities that you enjoy.
