Headquartered in Hot Springs, Arkansas, the forest is managed for multiple uses, including timber and wood production, watershed protection and improvement, habitat for wildlife and fish species (including threatened and endangered ones), wilderness area management, minerals leasing, and outdoor recreation.  Enjoy camping, hiking, biking, scenic driving, trail riding, water recreation, fishing, hunting, and more!

Charlton Recreation Area Now Open

Ouachita portal

This historic recreation area, located along the small but scenic Walnut Creek, offers camping, hiking, picnicking, fishing, swimming and so much more, all in the heart of the Ouachita National Forest. A small native stone dam and rustic bathhouse were built by the CCC in the 1930s, and contribute to the swimming portion of the rec area.

Objection Period Begins for Proposed Wolf Pen Gap Project

Final EA and Draft Decision Notice/FONSI available.

The Mena-Oden Ranger District has released a draft environmental assessment for the Wolf Pen Gap Off-Highway Vehicle (OHVs) System, located about 7 miles southeast of Mena, Arkansas. The project includes changes to the existing system of roads and motorized trails for public use, inlcuding OHVs. The proposed project is an activity implementing a land management plan and is subject to the pre-desicional objection process at 36 CFR 218 Subparts A and B.
