On June 9th, the USDA Forest Service is teaming up with partners to encourage youth to enjoy the great outdoors by hosting a free youth fishing derby. The fishing event is for youth up to age 15 who are supervised by a parent or guardian. Participants are asked to register and furnish their own bait and tackle to complete in the derby. Registration begins at 7:15am and the hooks hit the water at 7:30am. Participants can enjoy free food, door prizes, and educational programs. The Forest Service is hosting events throughout the nation in support of the “Get Outdoors Day” initiative to encourage youth to become active in the outdoors.
The event will be located at the Thloko Okhussee off Macon County Road 54 (also known as Vaughn’s Mill Road). The pond provides fishing primarily for channel catfish.
