Hearts Content Day Use

  

This combination picnic area/trailhead offers picnic tables, charcoal grills, pavilion, vault toilet, pressurized water fountain, informational and interpretive signing. It is an access point for the following trails: Hearts Content Interpretive Trail - a short 1.1 mile loop trail through the Old-Growth Forest (300+ year old white pine, hemlock and beech forest), the Tom's Run Loop - 3.2 mile cross country ski trail (located north of the trailhead), the Ironwood Loop - 3.3 mile cross country ski trail (located southeast of the trailhead and the Wheeler Loop - 1.3 mile cross country ski trail (located west of the trailhead and encircling Hearts Content Campground. An orienting course (a competitive sport that involves using a map and compass to find your way in unfamiliar terrain) can also be accessed from this trailhead. There are three orienteering courses to select from: Introductory - controls 1 - 10 are designed for easy hiking (all on trails), easy navigation; Intermediate - controls 21 - 26 are designed to be easy hiking (mostly on trails) but more difficult navigation; Advanced - controls 31 - 35 are designed for off-trail hiking and very difficult navigation. The trailhead is plowed during winter activity season - 12/20 - 4/1.

Restrictions: Forest Supervisor Closure Orders prohibit the use of mountain bikes and saddle, pack or draft animals. Be aware that this area is used heavily in the late fall and spring by hunters. It is a good idea to wear bright fluorescent colored clothing if hiking during these time periods.

General Information

Directions: Hearts Content Campground is located 15 miles southwest of Warren, PA. From the Mohawk exit of U.S. Route 6, take Pleasant Drive (State Route 3005/337) south for 11 miles. At the hard curve, turn left onto a gravel road (State Route 3005); go south for four miles to Hearts Content.

Day Hiking

This 10.5 kilometer (6.4 mile) trail utilizes old railroad grades, roads and existing trails to form several loops for your hiking abd X-C skiing pleasure. Of significance is the old growth forest of hemlock, beech and white pine in the Hearts Content National Scenic Area - enjoy the solitude and grandeur of these ancient trees.

Backpacking

This trail is for hiking, skiing and mountain biking. Motorized vehicles, ATVs and snowmobiles, are not allowed on any of the trails. Forest trails policy prohibits the use of a saddle, pack or draft animals on hiking or cross county ski trails. If you are hunting in the area, please make sure you are outside the campground boundary. All dogs must be on leashes when using the trail.
