Length: 1.7 ONE WAY

Elevation: 10,300 feet at junction at the Kinney Creek Trail (#22); 11,200 feet at Horseshoe Lake

Trail Description: Begin at the Kinney Creek Trailhead. The trail forks from the Kinney Creek Trail, a third mile after reaching the Byers Peak Wilderness boundary. The trail crosses Kinney Creek, continues southwards, and climbs gradually until a rock garden appears to the east. The trail cimbs steeply for a short distance, but returns to a gradual climb.

Best Season: Hiking conditions are best from July through September.
Restrictions:

Horseshoe Lake is located within the Byers Peak Wilderness, therefore wilderness regulations apply. 

  • Mechanized/motorized travel is prohibited.
  • Do not camp or build campfires within 100 feet of developed trails or bodies of water.
  • Pets must be under control at all times.
  • Group size is limited to 12 people and/or livestock. 
  • Practice Leave No Trace principles.
Unless seasonal restrictions are in effect, campfires must be attended at all times and cold to the touch with the bare hand before being abandoned. Collection of dead and down wood is allowed; do not break branches from standing trees for firewood.
Closest Towns: Winter Park, Fraser, Parshall
Water: Lakes and streams; treat water for drinking.
Restroom: Practice Leave No Trace principles

Directions:

Take County Road east of Parshall on Highway 40 or take County Road 15, 24 miles south of Kremmling on Highway 9.• Follow either to County Road 30 (NFSR 138). Follow County Road 30, 5 miles to Kinney Creek Road (NFSR 141). Continue on NFSR.
