Medicine Point Lookout

Medicine Point Lookout is a historic L4 lookout located on Medicine Point, west of Sula, MT. This lookout has been restored to reflect a lookout of the 1940's. It is poised between the east and west forks of the Bitterroot River and offers beautiful views of the Bitterroot Mountains as well as a vista of the southern Bitterroot Valley. On clear nights the lights of Hamilton, MT can be seen.

The lookout is one room with a bed platform suitable for two people but can accommodate up to four. The lookout measures 14' x 14' with a 30 inch catwalk around the outside. There is a woodstove for heat.  A two burner propane camp stove is provided, but you will have to provide your own propane canisters. Basic pots, pans, and dishes along with utensils for cooking and eating are provided. Water is not. A Coleman lantern is provided. Propane to operate it is not. An outdoor toilet serves the lookout. You will need to bring your own toilet paper. There are hitching rails for stock. The trail is rated difficult as it is quite steep in some portions.

General Information

Directions:

From Sula, MT head northwest 5 miles on Hwy 93. Turn west (left) on to Laird Creek Road (#370). Go approximately 4 miles to Bear Creek Saddle. At Bear Creek Saddle, turn north onto Road # 5731. Go approximately 2 miles to the Medicine Point Trailhead. The hike to the lookout is approximately 4 miles.

Medicine Point Lookout was originally built to watch for forest fires in the Sula/West Fork area. While it may have been built for work, you can now use it for play. This structure offers a unique chance to camp on a mountain peak in a rustic old-time setting, while having the enjoyment of recreating on public lands.
