Red Creek Trail

Difficulty:  Moderate      Trail Use:  Light

Length:   3 miles from Trailhead to ridge where trail disappears

Elevation:   5800 ft at Trailhead, 8286 ft at end on ridge

Open to:  Hikers, Equestrian, Mountain Bikes

Trail Highlights:

  • This trail basically follows Red Cr up for several miles, though open meadows and sections of willows.   It crosses the creek and heads up to the right, getting steeper as it climbs up the side drainage.  Eventually it gets up onto the flank of the hillside and switches back on itself, climbing steeply up to the top of the ridge.  This section of trail is very loose and rocky and can be difficult for stock.
  • Eventually the trail tread disappears on the ridge, although the route to Red Peak is very clear from this point by simply following the ridge.  The trail dropping down into the Dry Fork of Wolf Cr does not exist.

Options:

  • There are not really any loop options from this trail as most of these trails have disappeared up high.  You could drop into the Dry Fork of Wolf and follow it back out to the highway, but you’ll need a good map and know your route before you go.

Important Information

  • This trail is located on USGS quad maps for Ferry Peak, 7.5 minute.
  • This trail is difficult to follow in many places, have a good map and know your route well.
  • Always check the posted information at the kiosks for maps, updated material on forest regulations and closures.

General Information

Directions:

From Jackson, follow Highway 189 south to Hoback Junction and take a right over the Snake River bridge.  Follow the road down the canyon for several miles, past the turnout for Lunchcounter, past the turnout for Wolf Cr Campground, and you’ll see a small dirt road on the right side of the highway.  If you reach Sheep Gulch you’ve gone too far.  Follow the dirt road up briefly and park at the turnaround.  The trail begins just up the road.
