Barber Cabin


Area Status: Open

Russian River Campground and access road are closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic - closure. The closure is in place throughout the winter for public safety as construction and tree felling operations may occur at any time the environmental conditions allow. The Forest Service anticipates the first day for reservation arrivals will be June 5, 2023. The campground may open earlier on a first come first serve basis. 

For those planning to hike Russian Lakes Trail or make reservations at the Barber, Aspen Flats or Upper Russian Lakes Cabins while the closure is in effect, please be aware that there is no access from the Lower Russian Lakes trailhead. Access and parking to the trail and cabins are available from the trailhead on Snug Harbor Road.

A 16 x 20-foot log cabin on Lower Russian Lake surrounded by spruce forest and meadows with mountain views. Visitation at this cabin is high year round.

This cabin sleeps 6 and has a table, wood stove, splitting maul, crosscut saw, outhouse, and boat with oars.

Features for wheelchair visitors include ramps at front and rear doors, ramp to outhouse, and boat dock.

Not included: running water, electricity, mattress or bedding, cooking utensils, or cut firewood.

Current Conditions: While the Russian River closure is in effect there is no access from the Lower Russian Lakes trailhead. Access and parking to the trail and cabins are available from the trailhead on Snug Harbor Road.
Reservations: Cabin reservations can be madeup to 180 days in advance by calling 1-877-444-6777 (518-885-3639 overseas)  or visiting www.recreation.gov. Cabin reservations (check-in  & check out time) are from noon to noon.
Fees: Per night prices range from $50-75 (2018 prices) depending on season. Cabin fees are based on non-peak/peak season/days. Seasons vary by cabin. A non-refundable service fee will be added to each reservation by Recreation.gov
Restrictions: Russian Lakes Trail is closed to motorized vehicles year round between Russian River Campground and Upper Russian Lake Cabin. Russian Lakes Trail closed to pack/saddle stock from April 1- June 30.

Directions:

Barber Cabin is located off of the Russian Lakes Trail and is 3.4 miles from the trailhead at Russian River Campground. Turn onto Barber Cabin spur trail at mile 2.5.

The route in winter is 4.2 miles long and follows the Russian River Campground entrance road, the summer trail for 1.8 miles, then a marked winter route and across the frozen surface of Lower Russian Lake. 

Cabin can be accessed by hiking, mountain biking, horse riding, skiing, and float plane.
