The Capulin Snow Play Area had closed for the season.

Please see Closure Order 03-0457. Please check back frequently, as conditions change.

When making the decision to open Capulin, the District uses several criteria including:

  • Snow depth of at least 12 inches
  • Temperatures not exceeding 35 degrees in the afternoon
  • Temperatures below freezing at night
  • Verifying that the road to the Capulin Snow Play Area and the parking lot have been cleared

Reservations: No reservations are required for the snowplay area during the winter.

Fees $3.00 per vehicle per day $10.00 per bus per day. Annual Sandia Ranger District Annual passes are available for purchase. Passes cost $30 and can be purchased at:

  • Forest Service Supervisor's Office, Albuquerque, NM,
  • REI, Albuquerque, NM

Tips for Enjoying the Capulin Snow Play Area

We want you to be safe while you’re at the Capulin Snow Play Area. Here are some tips that will help make your visit enjoyable:

  • Dress warmly. Although there is an area for a campfire, it’s important that you have warm clothes and footwear.
  • Use extreme caution when sliding. Pay close attention to other sledders.
  • Use inner tubes or soft sliding devices that have no metal or wood components. 
  • Please do not use skis, sleds (with wood, metal or other hard materials) or snowboards
  • Please do not create jumps or alter any part of the sliding area
  • Please do not have more than 2 people on a sliding device
  • Please do not link sliding devices
  • Please do not bring or drinks or alcoholic beverages to the area
  • Please do not bring any glass or metal containers to the area
