West Point Recreation Area

If you are looking for campground with a family friendly atmosphere, try the West Point Campground northwest of Medford on the Mondeaux Flowage.

The West Point Campground on the Medford-Park Falls Ranger District is located on the Mondeaux Flowage with 13 accessible campsites equipped with a parking spur, campfire ring with grill, picnic table, vault toilets and drinking water. There is an accessible vault toilet and fishing pier at nearby Lakeview Day Use Site.

Day use facilities include access to the popular 416 acre Mondeaux Flowage and the Ice Age National Scenic Trail. There is no long term or day use parking for visitors entering the Ice Age National Scenic Trail within the campground. A dumpster is provided for registered campers.

So, if you like to hike, fish, swim, canoe, or picnic, then the Mondeaux Dam Recreation Area is the place for you, located 25 minutes north of Medford. The West Point Recreation Area is pet friendly; See restrictions below for more information.

Current Conditions: The open season typically starts the Thursday before the May fishing opener, which is the first Saturday in May.
Reservations: There are no reservable sites at West Point Recreation Area. All sites are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Fees: $15 per night. $7.50 with the use of an Interagency Pass (access or senior).

  • A maximum of eight people and four vehicles are allowed at each campsite. Vehicles include vehicles, wheeled camping units, and trailers.
Pets and Animals
  • Pets must be crated, caged, or on a leash less than 6’ in length while in developed recreation areas.
Firewood Closure Order
  • The firewood closure order prohibits possessing, storing, or transporting any firewood that originates more than 25 miles from your campsite. For more information, click here.
  • For current fire danger, check the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources burn restrictions website. Any prohibitions in place, including fire bans, will be posted on our website and site bulletin boards.
Quiet Hours
  • Quiet hours are from 10 pm to 6 am.
  • The use of generators is not allowed during quiet hours.
Occupancy & Use Restrictions ATV & UTV operation is prohibited in the campground.

General Information

Directions: Travel north from Medford for 4 miles on State Hwy. 13. Turn left (west) on County Trunk Highway M for about 7 miles. Turn right (north) on County Trunk Highway E for 8.5 miles, then turn right (east) on Forest Road 1563 for 1 mile. Turn right (east) for 1 mile to the campground entrance.

Campground Camping

The rustic West Point Recreation Area is on the beautiful 411-acre Mondeaux Flowage. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring. Garbage and recycling dumpsters are available in the campground for campers only. Most sites are spacious, and some are over 45' long. Some sites have lake access.

Most sites are back-in and not specifically designed for RVs.  Hookups and dump stations are not available.

Lake and Pond Fishing

The Mondeaux Flowage has good fishing opportunities. A boat landing is two miles away from Forest Road 106. Some lakes have special fishing regulations. Be sure to check regulations for the area you are fishing.

Fish Species Crappie, bluegill, northern pike, musky, and walleye.

Day Hiking

There are a couple of options for hiking at West Point. The Ice Age National Scenic Trail runs next to the campground. Another option is the Aldo Leopold Nature Trail which is less than two miles from the campground on Forest Road 106.

Viewing Scenery

Enjoy all that the forest has to offer, be ready to be surrounded by beautiful scenery of the Mondeaux Flowage.

Boating - Motorized

This is a motorized flowage mainly used for fishing. As a shallow flowage with occasional stumps, it is not conducive to water sports such as tubing and skiing. A boat landing is located two miles from Forest Road 106.

Boating - Non-Motorized

The Mondeaux Flowage is great for canoeing, kayaking, and paddle boarding around the curvy lakeshore. A boat landing is located two miles from Forest Road 106.

Swimming

A swimming beach is located near the lodge, less than two miles away, off Forest Road 106. This beach is for campers and non-campers.
