Area Status: Closed
The Locust Stake ATV Trail system is closed in the interest of public safety and natural resource protection.
This trail system has been suffering from some very serious environmental and safety issues. Last year it was closed so that a thorough condition assessment could take place. This professional assessment identified particular concerns and provided recommendations for Forest Service managers to consider. Managers also gathered additional technical expertise and collaborated with interested stakeholders to determine whether and how the Locust Stake trail system could be made sustainable.
Approximately 5 miles of trail maintenance, including Loops 1-5, is nearing completion. The reopening date for these sections was scheduled for August 24, 2013. Unfortunately, abnormal rain patterns and excessive rainfall amounts have delayed maintenance activities. This has led Forest Service managers to postpone the partial reopening of Locust Stake, so that it will not be open at any time during this season.
More extensive maintenance is required on Loops 7 and 8, which are located on the eastern side of the trail system. Some sections of the trail system were not scheduled to reopen because safety and environmental concerns cannot be resolved at this time. These sections include the Trestle Loop, which will be blocked to riders by boulders and other deterrents, as needed.
An Environmental Assessment is planned for the Locust Stake OHV Trail System. The public will have the opportunity to review and comment on the assessment and any proposed actions before final decisions are made.
An initial public comment period is being planned for this fall.
