Tate Branch Campground


Area Status: Open

This much admired 17-site developed campground is located at the junction of Tallulah River and Tate Branch in the North Georgia mountains. Whether traveling to the forest to camp, fish, hike, or just breathe clean mountain air, this remote location offers visitors a chance to escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday living and unwind. In addition, the site has 4 walk-in tent sites which allow campers and hikers to take full advantage of the area's rustic character.

At a Glance

Current Conditions: Tate Branch Campground is open for the 2024 season.
Operational Hours: The regular season opens from March 15th to October 31st  of each year.
Reservations: Reservations are not accepted. Occupancy of sites are on a first come, first serve basis.
Fees: Camping: $15/site/night payment cash, check, and coming soon Scan and Pay.

Restrictions:   The maximum stay is 14 days.  After the camper(s) has accumulated 14 days within any 30-day time period, the camper(s) must leave that area/campground and move from Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest land for 30 days before returning for another stay. NOTE: No UTV's, ATV's, or Golf carts allowed in the campground or on surrounding Forest Service Roads. 
Closest Towns: The nearest town is approximately 18 miles, or 25 minutes, to Clayton, GA. Here campers will find restaurants, grocery stores, etc.
Water: Drinking water is provided from one, centralized hand pump.
Restroom: 1 Vault
Passes:  The Interagency Senior and Access Passes, the Golden Age, and Access Passports are accepted.  These passes entitle the pass holder to a 50% discount on camping fees, there is no free camping. Please remember to write your pass number on the fee envelope to receive credit for the discount.

Information Center:  Please contact the Chattooga River Ranger District office at 706-754-6221or sm.fs.crrd@usda.gov.  The onloading or offloading of any Off Highway Vehicles (OHV) to include ATV, UTV, or Golf Carts is prohibited. Quiet Hours are from 10:00 pm to 0600 am. Checkout time is no later than 1:00 pm and check-in time is 2:00 pm. Although there are no hiking trails directly connected to the Tate Branch campground, the Coleman River Trail (trail length 1.0 miles) is only a short distance (approx 3 miles) south on Tallulah River Road.

Take U.S. 76 west from Clayton for 8 miles; turn right (north) on Perssimon Road for 4.2 miles; turn left (northwest) on Forest Service Road 70 for 4 miles.

Campground Camping

Camping at Tate Branch offers splendid views of the Tallulah River and rugged mountain scenery.

River and Stream Fishing

The Tallulah River is stocked routinely with Rainbow trout.
