Cave Run Trail provides one of the most challenging hikes in the Pioneer Weapons Wildlife Management Area due to varying terrain. The trail begins off of the Zilpo National Forest Byway, across from the entrance to the Tater Knob Fire Tower.
The trail begins by paralleling the north side of Zilpo National Forest Byway for 3/4-mile to the intersection of Forest Service Road 1058. The trail then follows a ridge top before descending into Big Cave Run Branch where it meets Connector Trail #108. From here, the trail ascends northward to the intersection of Hog Pen and Cross Over trails. The remaining 1.45 miles of Cave Run Trail travels north, gradually descending a ridge to the Buckskin Trail along Cave Run Lake. It travels northward to the intersection with Buckskin Trail # 113.
The trail begins near the shores of Cave Run Lake and Reynolds Hollow. Climbs southward to intersect with Hog Pen Trail #106 and Cross Over Trail #107 on ridgetop then goes south and down into Big Cave Run drainage, and back up to the Zilpo National Forest Byway and ends at the Tater Knob Parking area. Tater Knob Fire Tower. is closed to visitation.
