This section of the Sheltowee Trace National Recreation Trail begins at the Cumberland Ranger District office on KY 801 at Cave Run Lake and ends at the Clear Creek Lake trailhead. It is popular with many trail users because of its close proximity to Cave Run Lake and connections to other trails.
From KY 801 go north and turn left on KY 826 and cross the dam. Turn left at Stoney Cove Recreation Area. Follow the gravel road on the right up a short hill and look for the Sheltowee Trace on the right.
The trail to the left is the Caney Trail, which creates a scenic and relatively easy 9-mile loop with the Sheltowee Trace. Soil from inside the Caney area was taken to create the lake dam.
The trail joins the Pioneer Weapons Wildlife Management Area near the junction of Buckskin Trail. The Sheltowee Trace then follows the western boundary of the management area, which is marked with signs and yellow bands on trees. The Sheltowee Trace National Recreation Trail makes a few switchbacks and then drops down along a creek bottom to the junction of Buck Creek Trail. Continue on the Sheltowee Trace as the trail parallels Clear Creek Road (Forest Service Road 129) and comes out at the entrance to Clear Creek Lake boat ramp.
