This one-mile interpretive trail climbs up and onto an impressive lava flow of obsidian (black glass) and pumice. This trail is located within the Newberry National Volcanic Monument.

Collecting Obsidian or other material from any site on Newberry National Volcanic Monument is PROHIBITED. Penalty: up to $5oo fine or up to six months in proson or both.
Horses & mountain bikes prohibited.
There are seven interpretive signs along the trail. To access this area, take the left fork of the loop trail that is about 1/3 of the way up the trail. The Big Obsidian Flow is 1,300 years old, which makes it the youngest lava flow in Oregon.
