Pines in the Pumice Trail
Area Status: Unknown
Stand atop 50 feet of pumice deposited on this area 7000 years ago when Mt. Mazama erupted to form Crater Lake. It is a wonder how anything could grow, especially in this area that receives low precipitation, and where virtually all moisture immediately drains downward through the pumice. This forest is a remarkable ecological scenario in which plants, animals and insects gradually developed adaptability and interdependence over many centuries. Not suitable for long RVs and buses.
