Forest Trail #407 (Elk Creek Trail) is 3.8 miles long. It connects to Forest Trail #406 (Woods Lake) and provides access into the Lizard Head Wilderness. Elk Creek Trail offers spectacular views of neighboring peaks as it skirts scree fields at the head of Elk Creek Basin. It also offers a loop trail opportunity with the Forest Trail #406 and Forest Trail #421 (Wilson Mesa).

Directions: To access Forest Trail #407 (Elk Creek Trail) from Telluride, CO drive 6 miles west on State Highway 145 then turn left (south) onto County Road 60M (signed as the Silver Pick Road). Proceed south for approximately 3 miles where the road forks. Stay right, turning onto Forest Road #622 (Silver Pick Road). Continue south for approximately 1.75 miles, to the junction with Forest Road #645 (Elk Creek Road). Travel down Forest Road #645 to the trailhead of Forest Trail #421 (Wilson Mesa Trail) . Continue on Forest Road #645 about 0.4 miles to the trailhead of Forest Trail #407.
