Matterhorn #135


The Matterhorn Trail #135 is accessed from the Matterhorn Trailhead on the Gunnison Ranger District.  Follow the Ridge Stock Driveway Trail #223 to its intersection with the Matterhorn Trail on the east side of Matterhorn Peak just past the Gunnison/Ouray Forest boundary. Matterhorn Peak rises to an elevation of 13,590 feet. The trail rises over a ridge and descends down into the East Fork of the Cimarron Gorge.  It comes to an end at an intersection with the Middle Fork Trail #227.  The entire length of this trail is within the Uncompahgre Wilderness where Wilderness Regulations apply.

Directions:

Matterhorn Trailhead:

From Lake City, travel approximately 10 miles on the Henson Creek Road, which is part of the Alpine Loop Scenic Byway, to Capitol City.  Turn right onto North Henson Road, Forest Service Road 870, and continue for approximately 1.8 miles. At this junction there is a sign indicating the Matterhorn Trailhead is ahead. High clearance 4WD vehicles are recommended for the last 0.7 miles to the Matterhorn Creek Trailhead. Follow the Ridge Stock Driveway Trail #233 for approximately 2.4 miles to the intersection with the Matterhorn Trail.
