The Island Lake Trail #748 was built to aid fishermen and hikers with getting around Island Lake. The trail intersects the Little Bear Campground at .84 miles from the East end; it also connects with the Island Lake Boat Launch and fishing area 1.3 miles from East. The West end of the trail is at the Island Lake Campground. Campers from any one of these recreational areas may use this trail to tie in with the rest of the Ward Lake complex. Island Lake is one of the larger lakes on the Mesa. This lake is routinely stocked with trout, and has also yielded the state record splake.

Travel 23 miles south on Hwy 65 from Mesa, or by travel 16 miles north on Hwy 65 form Cedaredge. A gravel road intersects Hwy 65 on the west side directly across from the entrance to Cobbet Lake Campground. Travel east on this gravel road for approximately 3 miles to the Island Lake Campground entrance. The Western trailhead is located directly across the road from the campground entrance.
Travel 23 miles south on Hwy 65 from Mesa, or by travel 16 miles north on Hwy 65 form Cedaredge. The Trailhead is located on the north side of a gravel road at it's intersection with Hwy 65 and heads west along the south shore of Island Lake.
