Middle Point Escalante #631

From the upper trailhead, the first 3 miles of the Middle Fork Escalante Trail #631 traverses at a slight down grade through aspen and follows along a series of beaver ponds. The next mile travels through predominately oakbrush mixed with aspen and ponderosa pine, until the trail reaches the rim overlooking Escalante Canyon. The next mile is a very difficult section since the trail travels down to Escalante Creek through oakbrush at a very steep grade. After reaching the bottom, the trail follows along the stream for 3.5 more miles through oakbrush, pinyon and juniper, until the trail ends at the junction with an old two-track. The section of stream which this trail follows, usually supports a good fish population.

General Information

Directions:

UPPER ACCESS:

"At this time, the private land is not open for the general public . The alternative is to bush-wack around the private land. The following directions will provide an access through this property with permission from the land owners."

From the Northern Forest Boundary, travel approximately 28 miles south on the Divide Road, FSR #402, to its junction with South Bench Road, FSR #422.  Turn left (east) on the South Bench Road, which travels East and then north until it reaches the Dry Creek fence and gate. This fence is a boundary line between forest and private land, and is usually locked. After crossing through this gate, continue North for 1.2 more miles (past the Beaver Dam Reservoir) to the Calhoun fence and gate. This fenceline separates  the two private lands and may also be locked. After crossing through the second gate, continue on the South Bench Road (past the Calhoun Cabins) for 0.6 more miles to a fork in the road. Stay right and continue northeast on the South Bench Road for 0.2 more miles to Calhouns second boundary fence with gate. This gate also serves as the ending point of the South Bench Road and the beginning of the south Bench Trail. Pass through the gate and continue on the south Bench Trail for 0.1 mile to the upper Middle Fork Escalante Trailhead.

LOWER ACCESS:

From Highway 50, turn southwest at the Escalante Rest Area and travel 18.6 miles on the Escalante Road to the Forest Boundary. At this boundary, the Escalante road changes into the Love Mesa Road, FSR #500.1.  Travel 3.2 miles South from the boundary to where the road forks into two canyons. Stay right at this fork and continue southwest for 1 mile to where a two-track forks right off of the Love Mesa Road. Take this right fork and travel for 0.4 miles (across Escalante Creek) to the lower Middle Fork Escalante Trailhead.
