The Oak cabin sits within aspen/mountain shrub vegetation on the north end of the Uncompahgre National Forest. Oak cabin is 1 of 3 cabins at the Cold Springs Work Center. The original cabins were constructed in the 1930's and are located just off Forest Service Road #402, Divide Forks Road. All visitors should expect semi-rustic cabin accommodations. The cabin sleeps 4 adults; one bedroom with two twin size beds, one queen sofa sleeper in the living room and one bathroom/shower; non–electric cabin, with propane stoves/refrigerators. You must bring battery or propane lanterns. Basic cooking and eating utensils, plates, knives, forks, spoons, cups, and basic pots and pans are furnished. Cleaning supplies provided.

General Information

Directions:

From I-70: Take the Clifton/Delta Exit #37. After exiting onto I-70 business loop go to third stop light take a left on Hwy 141. Proceed south to intersection Hwy 141 & Hwy 50. Take a left on hwy 50 to the town of Whitewater 2.5 miles. Turn right on Hwy 141. Travel 14.4 miles. At this point, you will turn left (south). The road is not marked with a county designation. Just prior to turning onto this road, there is a sign. The sign reads: NATIONAL FOREST ACCESS, DIVIDE ROAD, UNCOMPAHGRE PLATEAU. Follow this road for 19.6 miles, take a left on Forest Road 406 (you will see a sign that says COLD SPRINGS WORK CENTER) go 0.3 mile then turn right on 406.1A. Cabin is located 0.5 mile after turning onto 406.1A. You will come to a gate with a combination lock. Call Grand Valley Ranger District (Monday-Friday 8am to 5pm) for combination. Oak cabin is the back cabin on the left.

The cabin can be accessed by passenger vehicle in the summer and early fall, and by 4WD from Oct. 1 to Oct. 30, depending on weather conditions.


General Notes:

The north Uncompahgre has an extensive ATV trail system known as the Divide Forks ATV complex, which provides 50+ miles of trails. Mountain biking is quite popular as well, with the well-known Tabeguache trail bisecting the Uncompahgre NF. Some fishing is available at Big Creek Reservoir and several small streams. In the fall, the main activities include recreational trail use and hunting.
