McKeever Cabin

Looking for a quiet, rustic place to get away for a few nights? McKeever Cabin may be just what you`re looking for! Located approximately 14 miles south of Munising, the cabin is situated on a small knoll surrounded by young evergreens and hardwoods and overlooking McKeever Lake. Nearby recreation opportunities abound, including hunting, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, swimming, skiing and more! The cabin was constructed in 1991 through a partnership between the Forest Service and Hiawatha Log Homes of Munising, as well as through considerable volunteer labor. McKeever Lake is a 132 acre lake located in the heart of the Hiawatha National Forest approximately 14 miles south of Munising in Schoolcraft County. The lake is 2 miles east of Forest Highway (FH) 2173. The cabin is situated on a small knoll surrounded by young evergreens and hardwood trees, and it is adjacent to McKeever Hills cross-country ski trail and Bruno`s Run hiking trail. Other recreation opportunities in the area include lake fishing, biking, canoeing, swimming and hunting. Developed campgrounds exist at nearby Pete`s Lake and Widewaters Recreation Areas. The Big Island Lake Wilderness, which provides only non-motorized opportunities, is a short distance away as well. McKeever Lake was stocked with northern muskie in 1990. It also supports a good population of northern pike, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass and bluegill. 

Be aware, this facility is not cleaned between user visits.

General Information

Directions:

When accessing the cabin by vehicle from the north, take M28 to Forest Highway 13, located 3 miles east of Munising. Proceed south on FH13 for 11 miles to FR2163, located directly across from the road to the Widewaters Campground. During the snow-free season, you can drive east on FR2163 for approximately one mile, following the brown signs with yellow arrows to the parking area. The hiking trail to the cabin begins before you get to the parking lot and is approximately 1000 feet long. You can also access the cabin by boat from the McKeever Lake Boat Launch.

In the winter, you must park at the entrance to the Widewaters Campground and ski or snowshoe FR2163 for approximately one mile. Snowmobiles are not allowed to the cabin

Activities

Cabin Rentals

The cabin can accommodate four people comfortably. Maximum allowed is 6.  Cooking can be done on your own camp stove, or on the top of the barrel stove which is equipped with a primitive cooking rack. Plan to bring your own equipment, including a camp stove, dishes, cooking utensils, containers for carrying water, toilet paper, lanterns, sleeping bags and pillows. The cabin has one table with stools, two sets of bunk beds (4 mattresses), one counter top, one corner seat and a wood burning stove, as well as two folding wooden chairs. There is no longer a loft in this cabin. There are no modern bathroom facilities or electricity. A pit toilet is located just off the trail to the cabin, and there is a (summer/winter) hand pump down the trail to the lake. All firewood will be supplied by the Forest Service.

Boating - Non-Motorized

The cabin can be accessed by water with canoe or kayak. There is a primitive access opening.  It is not marked and can be hard to find.

XC Skiing/Snowshoeing

Looking for a quieter, less manicured alternative to highly groomed trails without sacrificing quality? McKeever Hills Ski Trail may be just the ticket for you! McKeever Hills offers loops for skiers at a range of skill levels, including many downhill runs, and the trails are only periodically packed and tracked. Six miles of trail pass beside several lakes and through various forest types. Ski right from your door as the trail to the cabin connects to the ski trail.
