Current Conditions: Winter maintenance begins when snow is at least 4 inches deep.
Permit Info: A Michigan Snowmobile Permit is required for all snowmobiles on National Forest System lands.  See the MI-DNRE website for information on how to obtain a permit. Special Use Permit -
  • No special use permit is required for individuals or small groups (74 people or less).
  • Permits are required for commercial, event or large groups (75 people or more).
Visit the Passes and Permits section for more information on obtaining a special use permit. Snowmobile Permit - Snowmobiles must display a valid permit as required by State law. Permits may be obtained from the State of Michigan.

Hughes Lake Rd. ORV/Snowmobile Trailhead

  • Travel east on M-72 for 30 miles.
  • Turn right and travel south on M-33 for 9 miles.
  • Turn left and travel east on Hughes Lake Rd. for 1 mile.
  • The site is located on the left.

McKinley ORV/Snowmobile Trailhead

  • Travel east on M-72 for 30 miles.
  • Turn left and travel north on M-72/M-33 for .5 miles.
  • Turn right and trvel east on McKinley Dr./F32.
  • Turn right and travel southon Evans Rd. for .25 miles.
  • The site is located on the right.

M-72/Mio Snowmobile Trailhead

  • Travel east on M-72 for 29 miles.
  • The site is located ont eh right.

 

From West Branch

Lupton ORV/Snowmobile Trailhead

  • Travel east on M-55 for 5 miles.
  • Turn left and travel north on M-33 for 11 miles.
  • Turn right and travel east on Heath Rd. for 5.5 miles.
  • Turn left and travel north on Doll Rd. for 2 miles.
  • The site is located on the right.

South Branch ORV/Snowmobile Trailhead

  • Travel east on M-55 for 5 miles.
  • Turn left and travel north on M-33 for 11 miles.
  • Turn right and travel east on Heath Rd. for 11.5 miles.
  • The site is located on the right.
