A steep climb past several cascading waterfalls leads to Lake Helen on the Lundy Canyon trail. After Lake Helen more moderate terrain is found in the 20 Lakes Basin. Trails circle toward Saddlebag Lake and to the foot of North Peak and Mount Conness on the Yosemite National Park Boundary.

At a Glance

Current Conditions: Road has significant erosion. Travel with caution. Parking is limited at trailhead. Do not block road, utilize turnouts for additional parking.
Rentals & Guides: Guiding in Hoover wilderness is by Yosemite Mountaineering School.
Permit Info:
  • Wilderness permit required year round for overnight trips.
  • Day use does not require a permit.
Restrictions:
  • No campfires in 20 Lakes Basin
  • Food, trash and scented items must be stored in bear proof container or counter balanced.
  • Groups cannot be larger than 15 people (includes day use).
  • Guiding in Hoover wilderness is by Yosemite Mountaineering School.
  • Sierra Nevada bighorn sheep habitat, do not disturb this recovering species.
  • Hoover Wilderness regulations.
  • Yosemite wilderness regulations apply if entering Yosemite National Park.

Water: Water from creeks, lakes and springs should be treated before drinking.

Directions:

Leave Hwy 395 approx. 7 miles North of Lee Vining. Turn West on Lundy Canyon Rd, trailhead begins 2 miles beyond Lundy Lake Resort.

Lake and Pond Fishing

An invigorating hike to Helen Lake will give you a chance to bag Golden and Brook Trout, Odell Lake will hold Golden Trout, Shamrock Lake look for Brook Trout and Steelhead Lake Cutthroat and Brook Trout.
