Warming Hut Interior at Dee Mountain

Eight campsites and five picnic sites are popular in summer, and the cozy warming hut and extensive system of groomed snowmobile trails attract snow enthusiasts in winter.  Volunteers from the Mt Shasta Sno-Mobilers Club are active on the forest.

Permits and Regulations

Snowmobiles must have a current registration sticker displayed. Snowmobiles from out of state should contact the California Department of Motor Vehicles to register their machines prior to operating in California. Snowmobile trails are shared with skiers, snowshoers and dog teams. Operate snow machines at minimum speed until well beyond those on foot.

Safety First!

  • Be prepared for all types of harsh winter conditions, equipment failure and possibly a night in the snow.
  • Carry appropriate survival gear.
  • Never travel alone.
  • Watch for avalanche paths; avoid old slide paths, open gullies and slopes.
  • Do not attempt to cross frozen lakes or streams.
  • Slow down for blind corners.
  • Be aware of the danger of hypothermia and frostbite.
  • Dress in layers. Monitor and control your body temperature.
  • Operate your machine in a safe responsible manner.
  • On shared trails, operate at minimum speed until well beyond those on foot.

Directions:

From I-5 in Weed, CA travel northwest on US Hwy 97 approx 17 miles to Forest Road 42N12/Deer Mtn Road/ Forest Road 19. Turn east approx 4 miles to the Deer Mountain Snowpark.

Deer Mountain Snowpark is the heart of winter sports for northern California. The warming hut welcomes all winter users and the trails are shared with snowmobiles, skiers and snowshoers. The Klamath, Shasta Trinity and Modoc National Forests combine efforts in winter to manage a tri-forest area of over 250 miles of snowmobile trails. Deer Mountain provides access from the western side of the Goosenest District to this extensive trail system. A paved parking area suitable for RV's, a warming hut and loading ramp are provided.

XC Skiing/Snowshoeing

Permit: A current California Campfire Permit is required year round to use a camp stove, barbecue or have a campfire outside of developed areas. Local fire restrictions supersede the campfire permit. Inquire at the Ranger Station before having a fire.
