Idlewild Loop Trail #317
This is a short, easy hike that is great for kids, or for a break from traveling US Highway 395. Users can catch glimpses of this region's volcanic past as the trail runs along boulders and ancient ash-flows of welded tuff. This trail weaves through stands of old growth ponderosa pines, that are home to rare white-headed woodpeckers. Before exiting the trail make sure to look for remnants of a Civilian Conservation Corps era fence, but please do not disturb. The trail is open to hiking, biking, and cross country skiing. No stock or OHV are allowed on the trail.

General Information
Directions:From Burns, OR., travel 2.8 miles east on US Highway 20 to the junction with US Highway 395. Turn onto US Highway 395 and travel north towards the town of John Day, OR for approximately 14.6 miles to the junction with Forest Road 2820. Follow Forest Road 2820 for approximately 0.8 miles to the junction with Idlewild Campground Road. Follow Idlewild Campground Road for 1 mile to the campground.
