Oregon Mine Campground
Adjacent to Murderer's Creek, this little campground is a great base camp for hunters. The campground is a nice area for those wishing to horse camp, a buck and pole corral is located adjacent to the campground. Visitors to the campground can enjoy bird watching, hunting and fishing in near by creeks. Hikers have options in the Cedar Grove Botanical area and Fields Peak trail. Visitors may get the opportunity to see one of the beautiful wild horses that reside in the area.

General Information
Directions:From John Day, OR., travel approximatley 18 miles west on US Highway 26 to the junction of Forest Service Road 21. Travel south on Forest Service Road 21 for approximately 12 to the junction with Forest Service Road 2170. Travel west on Forest Service Road 2170 to Oregon Mine Forest Camp.
Activities
Campground Camping
Oregon Mine is a nice 5 site campground. The five sites feature picnic tables, compacted gravel and dirt pads and raised fire rings. The approach to the bathroom is a compacted gravel and concrete.
The campground gets heavier use during the late summer and early winter during big game hunting seasons.
This campground is a pack it in, pack it out site. Please remove your own trash when leaving the campground.
Day Hiking
Visitors to the area can enjoy multiple hiking opportunities within a few miles of the campground. Hikers can enjoy a hike through the Cedar Grove Botanical Area. The Cedar Grove covers about 26 acres and contains the only isolated stand of Alaska Yellow Cedar east of the Cascade Mountains in the United States. The trail that leads through the area is Cedar Grove Trail #203A.
Another great hike would be the Field's Peak Trail #212, this is a short 4 mile hike. The Fields Peak Trail is adjacent to the McClellan Mountain Semi-Primitive Non-Motorized area, this allows hikers to enjoy a more quiet experience. The Fields Peak Trail connects to the McClellan Mountain Trail #216 allowing for a longer hike in a beautiful area. The area does get heavier use during the late summer through early winter months due to big game hunting in the area.
Visitors to the campground and any of the trails in the area will see beautiful wildflowers in late spring and early summer. An abundance of wildlife habitate in the area, from big game such as Rocky Moutnain Elk, Mule deer, big horn sheep, cougar and bear to a variety of birds from wild turkey and grouse to water fowl such as ducks and geese. Smaller creatures such as squirrels and chipmunks are also abundant in the area. Visitors to the area may see wild horses throughout the area.
Horse Camping
Hores riders can enjoy a variety of choices with trails such as the Fields Peak Trail #212 and the McClellan Mountain Trail #216. A buck and pole corral is located adjacent to the campground.

Big Game Hunting
Hunting is popular in the area during late summer through early winter. Hunting for big game such as Rocky Mountain Elk, Mule deer, and big horn sheep is popular in the area.
