Ute-Heart Lake Trail #1110
This one-way 6.5 mile trail provides ATV/OHV access to anglers and hunters. A more technical trail, riders wind their way through spruce, fir and aspen, with Heart Lake at the end of the trail.
This trail makes a rather steep descent to the Bear River for the first 0.2 mile. Crossing a constructed foot bridge and the Coal Creek Ditch, it again regains elevation. For the next 2.1 miles, the trail continues to climb to its highpoint of 10,045 feet. From milepost 1.9 to 2.3 the trail crosses an open meadow overlooking Moore Park. The timber type now makes an abrupt change to a mixture of spruce and fir. When you reach Moody Creek at mile 3.5, the trail re-enters aspen forest . At mile 5, the trail passes west of Bull Park Reservoir, ascends a steep hill and then merges with an old wagon road to Heart Lake.
During the 1930s, a lodge for visitors operated on the northeast shore of the 26 acre lake. Some of its remains are still visible. A Forest Service back country campground was also maintained during the 1970s. Heart Lake was turned into an irrigation reservoir in 1910.
Parking is limited on heavy hunting weekends.
