Whetstone Trail #546


This ridge trail follows the boundaries of the Bull of the Woods Wilderness and Opal Creek Wilderness areas.  The trail connects Bagby Trail #544 and Forest Road 7020.  The trail travels through patches of Alaskan Yellow Cedar, Mountain Hemlock Douglas Fir and Silver Fir.  Views of Mount Jefferson and the Three Sisters are found along the ridge.

This trail begins at Forest Road 7020-028 (3,960’) and ends at Bagby Trail #544 (4,520’). From Forest Road 7020-028, the trail heads south towards Whetstone Mountain at a level grade. After 1.9 miles the trail reaches the junction with the Whetstone Trail #3369 (4,080’). From the junction, the trail continues to roll along the ridge for another 2.1 miles to the junction with Bagby Trail #544 (4,520’).

General Information

Directions:

From Portland, travel east on US Hwy 26 to Sandy.  Turn right (southwest) on OR Hwy 211 and travel 6.1 miles to OR Hwy 224.  Turn left (southeast) on OR Hwy 224 and travel 30.6 miles to Forest Road 46.  Take the right fork onto Forest Road 46 and travel 3.7 miles to Forest Road 63.  

Turn right onto Forest Road 63 and travel 3.5 miles to Bagby Road (Forest Road 70).  Turn right onto Bagby Road and travel 7.4 miles to Forest Road 7020.  Turn left onto Forest Road 7020 and travel  approx. 7 miles to Forest Road 7020-028 .

Turn left on Forest Road 7020-028 (approximately 0.1 mile before the end of Forest Road 7020) and drive to the parking area for the trailhead
