This lightly used trail is a family friendly hike. This trail offers excellent views of Mount Jefferson and Olallie Butte from the summit of Hawk Mountain. The cabin is available to visitors on a first come, first serve basis.
This trail begins at Rhododendron Ridge Trail #564 (4,950’) and ends at Hawk Mountain Lookout (5,250’). To access this trail, it is easiest to start from the southerly trailhead for Rhododendron Ridge Trail #564 at Forest Road 6355 (4,580’). Head uphill (north) on Rhododendron Ridge Trail #564 for 1.7 miles to the beginning of this trail (#546A). From Rhododendron Ridge Trail #564, this trail (#564A) heads east to the summit of Hawk Mountain. The lookout cabin at the summit has been recently restored. The round trip distance for this hike is 4.2 miles. The trail can also be accessed from the north end of Rhododendron Ridge Trail #564 at Graham Pass Road.
From Portland, travel east on US Hwy 26 to Sandy. Turn right (southwest) on OR Hwy 211 and travel 6.1 miles to OR Hwy 224. Turn left (southeast) on OR Hwy 224 and travel 25.6 miles to Forest Road 46. Turn right on Forest Road 46 and travel 27.1 miles to Forest Road 6350. Turn right (west) on Forest Road 6350 and travel 4.75 miles to Forest Road 6355. Take the left fork onto Forest Road 6355 and travel 0.25 mile to the Rho Ridge Trail #564 trailhead on the east side of the road. Follow #564 1.7 miles to the beginning of Hawk Mountain Lookout Trail #564A.
